The OGs In African American Female Group Travel Experiences
Encouraging black women since 2006

The natural beauty of South Africa is one of the country’s most magnificent treasures. From majestic mountains with breathtaking waterfalls and game reserves, to massive midlands and pristine beaches, South Africa's natural beauty is second to none. Frequently described as “A World in One Country,”  South African has a diversity of people and cultures that breathe life and energy into its dramatically different cities.  It is a country that must be visited more than once in a lifetime.

Many South Africans gave up much to place South Africa on the path to one day becoming a truly democratic country with equal rights to all, while paying reparations for the injustices of the past. With land reform and other mandates, a new black middle class is developing, and emerging are black elites that are accruing massive wealth along with power.

Day 2 - December 3rd: Johannesburg - Welcome Home!

Jobu.JPG

Johannesburgmore commonly referred to as Jo'burg or Jozi for some is considered the "heart and soul" of the country. It is a city that remembers its turbulent past, but that looks toward the future. Jo'burg is the largest and wealthiest city in South Africa's Gauteng province and is truly worth exploring. It is a melting pot of cultures, colors and languages. The fruits of the city are liberation and san influx of immigrants which has created a unique cosmopolitan environment and history. Upon arriving to the airport you will meet your local guide and board private transfer buses to the hotel for a little post flight R&R before a special welcome lunch and city tour orientation.

Day 3 - December 4: Soweto

33009462213_9946bb0114_o.jpg

Today, you will board a private bus for a cultural tour that will start in the township of Soweto (meaning Southwest Township). You will also visit The Apartheid Museum, a museum that tells the story of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity and oppression. Your randomly selected entry ticket will be a plastic credit-card sized card indicating either "Non-white" or "White."With this card, you will begin your harrowing journey back in time. At the Hector Pieterson Museum, you will learn about explosive riots that took place on June 16, 1976, when schoolchildren took the struggle against apartheid into their own hands. Hundreds of children around the country died on this day, but South Africa was never to be the same again.  You will also have a stop at the former home of Nelson Mandela before enjoying happy hour with the locals at a popular meeting place.

Day 4 - December 5th: the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site

cradle.jpg

Africa is the birthplace of humankind. This is where our collective umbilical cord lies buried.

Hominids – the ancestors of modern humans – first emerged about seven million years ago, in Africa. Many significant fossil finds have been made in South Africa and can be seen at the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. The first stone tools were made and used in Africa, at least 2.6-million years ago. Homo sapiens, the species to which we all belong, evolved in Africa approximately 200 000 years ago. All of humanity shares an African heritage. We are one diverse species across the globe, with our roots in Africa.

You will also visit the huge Sterkfontein Caves. Here you will find famous fossils like the 2.1-million-year-old Australopithecus skull, and “Little Foot,”an almost complete Australopithecus skeleton that is more than 3-million years old. Both tell us much about the precursors of modern humans, Homo sapiens. End your time in Jo'burg with a taste of night life.

Day 5 - December 6th: Cape Town

capetown.JPG

Today you will be transferred to the airport for your flight (flight not included) to Cape Town, the jewel of South Africa and the playground of the rich and famous. Prepare to be seduced by the sexiest, most sophisticated city on the continent and one of the most beautiful in the world. Cape Town is the second-most populous city in South Africa and the largest in land area. One of only two cities in the world with a national wilderness park running through it, Cape Town is a juxtaposition of city and wilderness. Its beauty is a magnet for illustrious visitors and a favorite for celebrities...like us! :)  Get ready to party like a rock start as you get your 2nd taste of South African night life.. Did some say Birthday cake? This night we will also celebrate our birthday girls.

Day 6 - December 7th: Robbin Island

nelson-mandela-robben-island.jpeg

Your day in Cape Town will start with a ferry ride to Robben Island. From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island served as a place of banishment, isolation, and imprisonment. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years of his life in exile on the island. Today, it is a World Heritage Site and a museum. Robben Island is a poignant reminder to the newly democratic South Africa of the price paid for freedom. The prison tour depicts the lives of political prisoners detained from the 1960s to 1991. Former Robben Island prisoners will conduct a powerful tour that will include Nelson Mandel's former prison cell. After the tour, head back to the mainland and a stop atop Table Mountain.

There is no escaping the sheer dominance of mother nature in South Africa and the city's most alluring landmark, Table Mountain. Once the preserve of leopards and lions, the flat-topped chuck of rock is part of a chain of peaks stretching northward inland and south into the peninsula. Below, the south Atlantic Ocean pounds cliffs. The steep aerial cable car ride up is a journey and view not to be missed. On the mountain, take in the breathtaking 360 degree panoramic view of land and ocean. After your ride down, it is time for a diamond lesson and shopping.

Day 7 - December 8th: Safari

45740959704_329b77420f_o.jpg

Grab your safari gear, as you head out to walk on the wild side. You will travel to a lodge, where the group will be divided into small groups to climb aboard safari jeeps. After a briefing, you will be whisked away from civilization as the sights, sounds, and smells of the bush take over. You will ride in to the jungle on the hunt for the BIG 5! Expect to be amazed by the sheer diversity and quantity of animals. Your iconic African safari will include the dramatic forest landscape, the Savannah, and River Mountain—rich in lion prides, elephant herds, and other animals whose secrets are revealed by expert game trackers.

Later, stop at at a village to learn history from an elder and give much needed gifts to the women and children.

Day 8 - December 9th

Shop til you drop! South Africans have their own sense of style and creativity, which are as diverse as the people who make up this rainbow nation. When it comes to shopping, Cape Town has something for everyone.

Meet your local fashionista in the lobby to visit the shops of South African fashion designers. If fashion shopping is not your thing, you can find other items at the open-air market.  Although African art and curios are obvious choices (there will be gems), there will be other unique items.

Day 9 - December 10th

Early in the morning, move your luggage to the hotel baggage check area and then head out for your last look around the city. Later, your sojourn is brought to an end as you ride to Cape Town International airport.  Arrive back to the States on the 11th.
