Gray Roots Stole the Show in Nairobi

My 2024 Birthday Tour to Kenya was unforgettable.

We set out to celebrate me—traveling from vibrant Nairobi to the coastal beauty of Mombasa. But as it unfolded, it became much more than just my celebration. For one of our sisters, Regina, a Rhodium level member with 21 tours, the experience turned into a celebration of her own.

Before the trip even began, Regina texted me with a question so many women wrestle with:
“Do you think I should cover my gray hair before I travel?” I told her what I truly believe, go how you feel, and rock your beautiful hair.

So she arrived just as she was: with her naturally kinky hair, radiant smile, and those unmistakable gray roots that glimmered like threads of silver. And there’s something breathtaking about way the silver gray hair glistens against her beautiful dark brown skin—it was a sight that turned heads everywhere she went.

On her second day in Nairobi, we were sitting in the hotel lobby when three men walked in. One of them caught her eye, smiled, and pointed toward her hair. She looked at him curiously—until he touched his own gray strands and then back to hers, still grinning.

That simple gesture said it all: your gray is beautiful.

And from that moment on, the compliments kept coming.

From Nairobi to the Mombasa coast, men noticed—not despite her gray, but because of it!

In Kenyan culture, as in many African societies, gray hair is seen as a crown of honor. It represents wisdom, maturity, and respect.

And it wasn’t just Kenyan men who noticed. One admirer was a younger Italian who had been living in Kenya for year found himself drawn to Regina and express it with flirtation conversation.

Her beauty transcended age and culture, making it clear that what she carried couldn’t be overlooked.

Her travel sisters, me included took notice. By midweek, the playful banter was in full swing:
“Next time, I’m coming with gray hair.”
“Forget that—I’m buying a gray wig.”

It was lighthearted, but it carried a deeper meaning. Because what Regina had once considered covering up turned out to be something warmly accepted and celebrated. She returned home not only affirmed, but transformed.

In Regina’s own words: “Being in Kenya made me feel seen.”

Regina’s experience fits into something we’ve witnessed all around the world.

-- In Italy, many men have told me they prefer women their own age—partners who will age with them and share the same seasons of life. In fact, large age gaps are rare; couples close in age are the norm.

--  In Northern Europe, especially in Sweden and Copenhagen, I noticed something striking. TV ads weren’t flooded with half-dressed young women, and lingerie shops sold mostly practical pieces, designed for women themselves. In cultures with stronger gender equality, attraction is less about youth and sex appeal and more about character, confidence, and independence.

In Japan, cultural shifts are changing how age and relationships are viewed. Large age gaps are less common. Companionship, stability, and shared life stages are ivalued over chasing youth, reflecting a quiet respect for maturity.

-- And in Kenya, Regina’s experience showed us that gray roots aren’t hidden—they’re celebrated.
